First off, this isn't even close to topical. Like someone else said if DRM
is to be had in the android version Google will likely handle it. But since
absolutely no one has spoken up in defense of the scheme, it falls to me to
play devil's advocate.
The fact of the matter is that, by and large, we blind people are a bunch of
thieving magpies. Not only do we not pay for stuff, but thanks to the
culture of entitlement governments encourage by buying all our assistive
tech for us, we don't even see why we should pay for things. People write in
plaintext in the NVDA drop box folder about this cracked, illegal software
that is also in said folder, and then--just in case publicly admitting to
crimes on an account in the Prism program wasn't stupid enough, they write
their own names down! Ten seconds of searching on my own computer revealed
this:
'Does someone have a license of Vocalizer Expressive for NVDA? ... using the
crack is good for the moment, but there are some bugs with it.'
'Hi, I didn't ask if someone could give me a license, but only if someone
has bought a license and has received the activation code.
Thanks.
Patrick'
'Sean Terry
How can I get the crack of the vocalizer expressive?'
'As for the cracking vocalizer, I guess I kind of understand it. not
everyone can in fact afford that. I mean 50 dollars is an awful lot of money
to someone who doesn't have 50 dollars. That being said, if you can afford
it, maybe we should at least consider buying them if there quality has
improved, as they are donating proseeds from sales.'
'Saalom'lkha people!
Here is new crack, credits goes to Valentin stankevich for the bugfixed
crack.
Vocalizer 3.0.2 driver crack is here. you can do everything you want with
your vocalizer now it works.
saalome,
Zvonimir'
And this, my personal favorite:
'Hey, is there any working license for NVDA vocalizer expressive 3.0? I just
can't buy it myself and there's nothing like that in the folder. I'm not
currently able to buy stuff myself, and won't be able to for a few years
anyway. It's not my fault, and the only alternative I can go with is
cracking. I know some people in here might not be OK with pyracy but it's
the only way I can go if I don't want to wait about 5 years to get
everything I really want. cracking is illegal although there's lots of
people who do it. Guillem'
See that? He can't afford it, so he *has to* crack it. The idea of just
going without literally does not occur to him, or anyone else. We're blind,
so we deserve it, NOW. Again, not on some obscure backwater forum or twitter
conversation (or 'twittersation'), that's right in the official NVDA drop
box. That is monitored by Tiflatechnia. We have proven to them, by our
actions, that we cannot be trusted. That isn't an opinion, that's a fact. If
we're going to change that public perception, we have one option: be better.
Until that happens, we have lost the moral high ground on this issue.
Completely. So its not at all surprising that the licensing scheme is
restrictive. Especially given that in version 2, they tried a less
restrictive license, and it was shared six ways to Sunday. OF course people
will just crack it anyway, but that's kind of like saying well, this bank
vault could get broken into, so let's just leave the door open and take it
on faith that people won't walk off with your money. That's not a serious
solution, and that's what's needed here. So you can't use your voice add-on
because you unplugged your computer from the interwebs? OH em GEE! If only
there was some solution! Like oh, I don't know... PLUGGING IT BACK IN? Or
something. I assume that if you aren't using a computer for several months
you would want to do that to update it, in any case. I know it's kind of
annoying and inconvenient, but it's that or have everyone steal it. Or some
third option which no one is even considering because bitching on the WRONG
email list is easier. And will fix everything! Seriously? I'm disappointed
in all of you--well, not really, most of the people piling on I expect
nothing more from. But you, Ollie, should know better.

Subject: Nuance Voices
Hello list,
I've just found out that there's a strange rule now with Vocalizer
Expressive voices, according to which licensea are checked weekly. Ther
esult is that, if you don't connect to the internat for 7 days, you won't
be able to use your regulary bought voices. You'll have to connect and go
to restore your license.
This is happeining with NVDA. It hasn't happened to me yet, but several
users here have complained already.
The rason why I'm posting this here is that many of us are looking forward
to the Android version of Vocalizer Expressive.
If this same abusive behaviour is going to be maintained for Android
voices as well, Nuance can definitely forget about my buying them.
I wanted to warn you, so that we can be ready and not be caught by
surprise in case this should happen one day.
Rui is on this list, so maybe he can explain or reassure us on this point.
I have bought a product, shelled out money for it, so I expect to be able
to use it at all times, whether I use my computer every day or not,
whether I connect to the internet or not.
It's none ov Nuance's business what I do with my computers, once I've
regularly paid for my license.
this will teach me to go and buy proprietary stuff. I never do that, but I
needed a Hebrew voice, and I didn't have 600 dollars to shell out for
Sivan .
Ciao,
Ollie
